How do you feel about this cartoon? Why is it so important to know how to ready a map? What do you think about this statistic? You have until 7am on Monday Oct. 4th 2010 to leave your post.

  1. This cartoon makes sense because not everyone is as educated and know how to read a map. It will benefit people to know where they are, if they get lost. That way, if they are lost they can just use a GPS or their prior knowledge to get back to wherever they have to go. Plus, if you want to go to another country or state, it would be best to know which direction they are headed.

  2. I think it is really sad for a couple reasons. First if they get lost they dont know how to read a map so they are basically lost. Second, since we go to schools and stuff we should be learning about maps in school and stuff to help us in the future. You never know when you need to know this stuff.

  3. Knowledge of maps is very important for various reasons. It's not too hard to learn how to read a map so not knowing makes you look dumb. It's also a very sad statistic because a lot of people don't bother to learn it and they'll get lost.

  4. I think this cartoon shows how wrapped up people are in other things and there not more focused in our whats going on in America. To not be able to find Iraq on a map, when clearly our country is at war there and other various countries, is pretty ridiculous. Also to not be able to read a map in general is horrible. I think people have depended upon technology too much, such as GPS. However when that no longer works people cant even get to there house from down the block. But i think its funny how George W. Bush is the one holding the map.

  5. I think this is sad because most people learned how to read a map in school but didnt pay attention. So 6 out of 7 people didnt pay attention in school and have a better chance of getting lost if they are on a road trip and all they have is a map. I think that this statistic should push people to learn more about being able to read a map because most people will need this skill when they grow up.

  6. I feel that its disappointing that only 1 in 7 people in the US can find Iraq on a map. Maps are a vital part of life due to its ability to navigate without the use of technology. It is just like a GPS system without the irrtating voice of a computer navigater. Now, the cartoon used to show this statistic is actually funny because former president, George W. Bush, was questionable because people were left wondering as to what direction this country was going and in my honest opinion the country was heading south, or downhill so to speak.

  7. I feel this cartoon is sad becasue I feel people are more dependent on technology , such as a GPS to tell them where they have to go. I think it is important to know how to read a map because it will benefit them in the long run. Such as if they go on vacation, they will be able to go to all the sites because they learned how to read a map. I feel this statistic needs to change because although we do have the GPS we should have a back up .

  8. From looking at this map all I can think is Iraq=war=almost unimportant to most American's eyes because all they know is that as of right now it is a bad place where you do not want to be. Also some people may not know how to read maps and with all the technology we have in the world today they may think it's highly unnecessary to use a map when you have a gps in their car or on their phone. I think this cartoon just shows mainly how technology has taken over our lives and how our independent knowledge is decreasing.

  9. I think it is very disappointing that only 1 in 7 americans are able to locate Iraq on a map. This is disappointing because we should be able to use, read, and understand a map the same way we are able to use and unsderstand technology such as a GPS. Everyone should be able to use a map and learn not to depend on the use of technology.

  10. i think that us trying to find peace with each other is going to be hard if we dont know about each other. like where we live and where we come from. 1 in 7 is real low and sad even thou im not the 1 in the 7 maybe.

  11. I think Americans do not care enough to know where Iraq is because of 911. Its pretty important to know how to read a map because if you get lost and you do not have a GPS your stranded and in some other cases you might not even have the option of a GPS, for example, an amusement park. People depend too much on technology and need to focus more on life before it.

  12. I think that the cartoon is very interesting and shows you that Americans are partly selfish because as long as things aren't affecting them directly they don't care about it. It is important to know how to read maps because it can help you when you least except it to. The statistics is sad because America is suppose to be on of the leading countries of the world and we don't even know how to do simple things as reading maps. Americans are becoming more lazy.

  13. I think that this cartoon is very true because most Americans feel that it isn’t important to know where Iraq is. Most Americans do not care about where Iraq is located on a map. This is very sad though because we should be able to locate Iraq just like any other nation on a globe. It is very important for us Americans to know how to read a map because in any emergency that you need to get somewhere you can’t always depend on technology to get to places. The statistics are very sad because we should all be educated enough to locate any country on a map.

  14. This cartoon outlines the major issues we have in present day America. The fact that we are in war in that country shows how incompetent Americans are. We are mainly unaware of any other countries besides our own. This is a shocking fact, but shows the issues American society portrays. Not knowing where Iraq is on a map proves we are unaware as well as uncaring of what goes on in and out of our borders. Knowing how to read a map is very important. Today's society relies mainly on technology for guidance. When technology fails we might be stranded, learning how to read a map could be a life saving skill in that situation. But the fact Americans unable to find Iraq is sad. We should be educated enough to use a map

  15. i think that the statistic is pitiful because we are at war with IRAQ where thousands of our people are dying every day yet on 1 in 7 of us on the mainland can find IRAQ on a map now thats od

  17. I think its extremly sad for us as americans but not surprising. I think the fact that we cant find Iraq of all places on the map is a HUGE problem considering we have a war going on down there an our loved ones are involved.i think that those 1 out of 7 americans are ignorant an dont really care all that much about anything but hey like i said it doesnt suprise me...

  18. In today's society it is ashame how much we depend on technology. With all of the new enhanced equipmet that's coming out we need to learn to go back to doing things the old way. Hence this blog about the map. We rely on navigation system in our vehicles to get us where we need to be with a press of a button. It is still important to know and learn how to read a map. What will happen if your navigation software shuts down? You will be stuck with no chance but to follow the route on your map. By reading a map it will enhance our sense of direction. This article is very true since most people do not know where Iraq is located on the map.

  19. I feel that most Americans don't care where Iraq is or care how to read a map because we have gps now. The problem with gps is that the battery can die, it can break, or you can be in a dead zone. Then what?

  20. I think it's sad that most Americans do not know where Iraq is,especially that we have our troops over there.Americans today are depending on technology which is bad because technology can not always be accurate.

  21. I think it's quite ignorant that only 1 in 7 americans actually know where iraq is on the map. It just shows that us as Americans are not aware of our surroundings. The new generation of Americans depend largely on technology and the truly important things don't really matter.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I feel that this is very sad because it shows how our generation slowy becoming less intelgent because of all of the new technologies we have which do almost everything for us and leaving alomst nothing up to real humans anymore.

  23. This cartoon shows more then just statistics about Americans not being able to read a map. It shows how people aren't involved with the out side world as much because everything we need is in the tips of our fingers. No one takes the time to read maps any more because we have the technology to just press go and it takes us to where we need to be. Now a days so many people have it easy with all the availabilities in the world and its taking away from not only our work ethics but but our dependency on ourselves. If you take away technology from more then half Americans i can pretty much guarantee they will be lost in almost anything they do.

  24. This cartoon shows how Americans look when they look at a map.It also refers to most of the Americans who do not know how to read a map. It's important to know how to read a map because it helps you get around and have an understanding of the world and it's physical layout. To me, I think the statics is very shocking because I would imagine that more Americans would know how to read a map for job and personal purposes.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think its sad because people pay more attention to technology than what's really going on in the world.People seem to be more dependent on technology than anything else.

  26. I think that the cartoon is true. Before Bush invaded Iraq, many Americans probably didn't even know that Iraq existed. Most people in today's society rely only on technology such as the GPS, computers, and cell phones to show them how to get to a specific location. Maps are important to be able to read in case technology fails.

    ReplyDelete
  27. This cartoon shows how uneducated people are. Well, they are not uneducated but they feel as if they don't need to learn how to read a map. Many people drive by using fancy technology, but imagine if there was not of that? Everybody would be depending on knowledge and maps. I think it is really sad to see that only a few people know how to read maps.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I feel as though this is very sad because if you don't know how to read a map, you have a greater chance of getting lost. It seems as if nobody really cares about where Iraq is located. It shows that if you were taught how to read a map in school, that 6 people didnt care for it and thought that they would never need to know how to read a map in their lifetime. It also portrays how people may be becoming too dependant on technology today to get to places.

    ReplyDelete
  29. This cartoon is funny because it is saying ,to me, that most americans don't even care or notice iraq but some of us, like Bush, "stick their noses to deep" into something that they really should not be concerned with

  30. I feel that its sad to know that 1 in 7 Americans know where Iraq is on a map. This shows how us Americans rely heavily on technology such as an GPS to locate them to an destination and forgot how to read an original map.

    ReplyDelete
  31. knowing how to read a map is important because what happens when you get lost one day and have no idea where you are. what can you always turn to.. a map. not everyone is educated enough to know how to read a map so when you do know how to read one feel lucky and proud of yourself. education is the key to success the more you know the further you get in life and that includes knowing how to read a map. you should know how to use one in all your four years in high school and throughout college.

  32. I think this political cartoon should be an eye-opener to Americans. our country used to be number one and it has sinked down to number 25. before bush came into office things were much better with the world. & to think that we were fighting for so long most Americans should know where Iraq is. this just goes to show how uninterested we are about our current events and things that are important.

    ReplyDelete
  33. This cartoon is trying to tell Americans that George Bush himself didn't know much about where Iraq was located. It is important to know how to read maps so that we know where places are, and how to get from place to place. Technology can help us, but it won't always work. Maps, on the other hand, will. Americans need to learn how to use their brains more, rather than an electronic. This statistic needs to be changed because it shows that we are lazy when it comes to trying to find things, and just automatically turn to something with batteries. We need to be less lazy and more patient when it comes to figuring things out, and locating places. A lot can be learned just knowing the geography of our world.

  34. It's sad that 1 in 7 Americans doesn't know where Iraq is. It's truly disappointing that one of the wealthiest countries in the world fails to educate people. Knowing how to read a map is vital because how can you get from one point to another without knowing where you're starting from? The cartoon shows how self absorbed some people are with only keeping all the riches to themselves when they should be sharing their knowledge and wealth for the betterment of everyone.

  35. I feel that this cartoon shows how Americans, or any other country for that matter, dont know how to read a map as good as they did back in the old days. People who own GPS, whether in their car or as a hand-held, don't bother to learn how to read a map. They can get stuck somehwere without any type of communication device, or a place with no signal, and can totally be stuck until they find their next source of help.
I feel that this statistic should be changed and that people should learn how to read a map, because one can never know what's coming at them next.

  36. I think that this statistic is really sad. Most people think that it is useless to know where things are on maps but, knowing a map will help you someway or another in life.

  37. I feel that it is sad that only 1 in 7 Americans do not know how to read a map. It is important to know how to read a map so if you get lost, if you're on vacation, or in a place with no signal you can find where you are going instead of panicking. I think that this statistic is to low and it should be higher.

  38. I think the statistics shows that many people don't really care about the world. Meaning they mainly focus on themselves & their country so located and finding any other country doesn't mean anything to them. I think the cartoon is trying to say that Bush has no idea in how to read a map either. He could probably be the reason why the statistics are so low.

  39. It's sad that only 1 in 7 Americans can read a map correctly. Especially a country that should be so well known by us Americans. I think this statistic should change very soon because Americans don't look good with this. shakingmyhead

  40. I feel a bit shocked and interested in this fact mainly because it is awful that this statistic will show to others that many of us are too relying on technology that we forget our studies of Geography. It is important to ready a map because we can learn and interpret more out the information/origins each country, city, or state has to offer. I think, after reading this statistic, that we should find an easier method for Americans to at least be able to find and locate each state in America. It would be a shame to be called Americans if we don't know America =(

  41. I personally think that it is sad that only 1 in 7 Americans know where Iraq is on the map.Iraq is one of the countrys that is heard of the most because of our American troops fighting in war.I also think that it is important to know how to use a map to help you get around to different places and know where you are. After reading this statistic Americans should stop depending on technology to take the place of there brains.

  42. I think that its sad that only 1 in 7 Americans know how to find Iraq on a map. But im not shocked by it because in this day in age we use alot of technology, if u were to ask someone to look up a country on a map they probably look at u wierd, but if u ask for them to use their phone or any or technology they could tell you anything you wanted to know about it.for the Bush cartoon i think its saying he didnt know either.

  44. I think it is sad that most people cannot find places on a map. I think one of the main reasons for this is that we rely too much on technology today, if you ask someone to look up a place, they'll just google it.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I feel it is a great letdown that very few Americans can read a map accurately. I blame the fact that people rely on technology for almost all the aspects in their lives. Knowing how to read a map is of great importance because if someone were to get lost without a G.P.S. or a cell phone they would not know how to find their way out of the circumstance.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I think technology played a part in people not knowing where places are. Now we don't rely on maps to find a place, we just search it and it pops up. Reading a map can be very helpful though. What would we have to rely on when you can't find your G.P.S, your phone is dead, and you have no other technological recources? Read a map, so whoever can't read a map needs to hurry up and learn soon.

  51. I think its sad because everyone should know how to read a map, but maybe some people don't care about certain countries so probably that's why they don't know a lot about maps.its important to know because you need a map when your stuck in situations when your lost and need to find a way to go to wherever you need to go, and if you cant read a map then your lost.

  52. this is a good cartoon because alot of people probably cant even find simpler countries on a map. It shows how much uneducated people are if they cant find Iraq, when thats the country OUR own country's been in battle with for so long. If you cant read a map, it just shows how much people dont care about our world.

  54. Some people in america aren't properly educated to understand a map like the rest of the world. It is also unbelieveable that 1 out of 7 americans can not locate where Iraq is on a map considering our country is currently at war with Iraq. Using George Bush in this cartoon is also ironic considering the fact that he was the president who put our country into an even worse state with Iraq and people in america also referred 2 him as not the smartest president america had.
